The Nihilist:

Tearing, gorging,

Merciless Death —

What is Life

But endless suicide

A paradox of slaughter to survive?

Plow and sickle

Fang and claw

The just scales of Natural Law?

How can we savor

The bird’s song or flower’s bloom

Knowing their fate

To be stricken and consumed?

If Darwin’s doctrine be believed

What good has Man’s ascension served?

Still he remains under beastly curse

Lurching to Oblivion in the Reaper’s hearse.

The Idealist:

Cease the ravings

Of carnal mind

And the Infinite plan you will divine!

What appears to the natural eye

Only to acquiesce and die

Transmutes to rarefied state

As seers of old did testify

And Science’s theorems do imply.

In Evolution’s upward march
